Change Date of a File on a Mac

So amazing and easy to do!

I’m kind of OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder). I want things right, in their proper place. Files on a computer is no different. I can label files all day long with a date, such as “Filename 20210926” and it will be very easy to sort with the other files in the folder (aka directory), presuming they have the same surname. Filename 20210926 will sort well with Filename 20210826, but try sorting it with Oldname 20210915, and you’re not going to have much luck.

BUT! If you sort by the Created By date or the Modified By date, you can have, perhaps, a little more luck. That’s if you created the files in the correct order. I didn’t, so I had a problem.

It is unbelievably easy to change the date! Easy, if you’re okay with using the Terminal program which comes with every Mac computer. It’s not user-friendly. It reminds me of the old DOS days. Actually, this command is from UNIX, which I understand pre-dates DOS by about ten years.
Type this into Terminal:

touch -t YYYYMMDDhhmm

Use Finder to find the file you want to change. Drag it into Terminal. Press ENTER/RETURN, and voila! It happens.

Full credit goes to the folks over at CHRON.com which gave me these simple instructions. Their page has a whole lot more detail on the matter. I’m just so excited to get it done!

Amazon Smile Search on Google Chrome

The Google Chrome browser (which everyone should be using) has a search feature from the address bar (also known as the Omnibox.. bwahahahaha!). If you just type something in there, and press enter/return, it will search for whatever you put. By the way, if you type CTRL-Enter or Command-Return (for Macs), Google Chrome will add the .com to the end of what you typed. So, type hammer and then press CTRL-Enter, you will be sent to Hammer.com
I see a lot of people typing, say, yahoo and then enter, only to go to a Google search page where they then click on Yahoo.com .. GRRR!! 😡  This drives me crazy! If you really wanted to go to Yahoo.com, just type yahoo and CTRL-Enter. Boom! Save steps, time, and more!

Google Chrome automatically adds many search engine results to its database. The default is Google.com, of course, but if you visit Walmart.com, now, you should be able to type Walm press TAB, and whatever you type will be searched at Walmart.com
It works amazingly well, for most all websites. For those it doesn’t, you can add those sites to Google Chrome, via Settings > Manage Search Engines.

Google Chrome Search Engine Settings

Manage Google Chrome Search Engines

Add Custom Search Engines To Google Chrome

Google Chrome Add Search Engines

Add a new search engine: Enter a label for the search engine.

Keyword: Enter the text shortcut you want to use for the search engine. You can use the keyword to quickly access the search engine via the address bar.

URL with %s in place of query: Enter the web address for the search engine.

Now, the point of this post:

Amazon has a free service called Amazon Smile. Basically, a portion of everything you buy is donated to whatever charity you choose. Great, right? If Amazon is going to donate, might as well be to a charity you care for.
Unfortunately, for me, the default Amazon search put into Google Chrome just searches the regular site. I want it to search Amazon Smile, so they can donate to the charity of my choice.

You can add or edit the Amazon search to this: https://smile.amazon.com/s/url=field-keywords=%s

and now, Google Chrome will search on Amazon Smile.

Simple and easy!

How to BCC yourself in Microsoft Outlook

BCC your e-mail to yourself in Microsoft Outlook!
I’ve been having a hard time finding out how to automatically BCC yourself in Microsoft Outlook for Mac 2015/16, and it is simply so easy!

Simply click on the Outlook menu and Preferences.
Choosing Outlook > Preferences

Choose Composing
Outlook Preferences Menu

Finally, mark the box “When sending messages, automatically BCC myself”
You can also choose to CC yourself, with the dropdown menu, but not both.
Composing Menu with BCC yourself

That’s it!
So simple! I’m banging my head against the wall.
However, I thought to write it down and post it here for all to see.

Oh, and if you don’t yet have Microsoft Outlook for Mac, I highly recommend it. You can get it here for a low, low price:

Enjoy!

Cats In The Cradle Commercial

This commercial aired during the 2015 Super Bowl XLIX (49). It features Harry Chapin’s classic tune, “Cats in the Cradle” being sung over a car commercial, of all things.
It brings me to tears every time.

Below are the full lyrics for the original song, which was shortened for the 90 second commercial:

My child arrived just the other day
He came to the world in the usual way
But there were planes to catch and bills to pay
He learned to walk while I was away
And he was talkin’ ‘fore I knew it, and as he grew
He’d say “I’m gonna be like you, Dad
You know I’m gonna be like you”

And the cat’s in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin’ home, Dad
I don’t know when, but we’ll get together then
You know we’ll have a good time then

My son turned ten just the other day
He said, “Thanks for the ball, Dad, come on let’s play
can you teach me to throw”, I said “Not today
I got a lot to do”, he said, “That’s ok
And he walked away but his smile never dimmed
And said, “I’m gonna be like him, yeah
You know I’m gonna be like him”

And the cat’s in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin’ home, Dad
I don’t know when, but we’ll get together then
You know we’ll have a good time then

Well, he came from college just the other day
So much like a man I just had to say
“Son, I’m proud of you, can you sit for a while”
He shook his head and said with a smile
“What I’d really like, Dad, is to borrow the car keys
See you later, can I have them please”

And the cat’s in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin’ home son
I don’t know when, but we’ll get together then, Dad
You know we’ll have a good time then

I’ve long since retired, my son’s moved away
I called him up just the other day
I said, “I’d like to see you if you don’t mind”
He said, “I’d love to, Dad, if I can find the time
You see my new job’s a hassle and kids have the flu
But it’s sure nice talking to you, Dad
It’s been sure nice talking to you”

And as I hung up the phone it occurred to me
He’d grown up just like me
My boy was just like me

And the cat’s in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
When you comin’ home son
I don’t know when, but we’ll get together then, Dad
We’re gonna have a good time then

The 85th Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Thursday, January 10, 2013, at 5:30 a.m. PST. This is highly unusual, as the nominations have been revealed on Tuesdays for as far back as I can remember.

The Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2012 will be presented on Sunday, February 24, 2013 and be broadcast on the ABC television Network. This year’s telecast will be hosted by Seth MacFarlane of Family Guy fame (and this year’s Oscar eligible film, Ted).

Thank you to oscarchallenge2013.wordpress.com/ for compiling the list.

First Fast Food Hamburger Joint

So, mind a wandering, which Fast Food hamburger restaurant was started first in the United States?

Specifically, one that is relatively nationwide, and still around?

Via Wikipedia*, the following list was compiled, by me, and sorted by date:

Restaurant Year

McDonald’s 1940

Dairy Queen 1940

Carl’s Jr 1941

Tommy Burger 1946

In and Out Burger 1948

Jack in the Box 1951

Fatburger 1952

Burger King 1953

Hardee’s 1960

Taco Bell 1962

Arby’s 1964

Del Taco 1964

Wendy’s 1969

Red Robin 1969

Naugles 1970

* I understand Wikipedia is able to be changed by ANYone, heck, I’ve changed it myself (see here). So yes, I take it with a grain of salt. However, it’s quick and easy, and if there is anything to dispute here, please comment and let me know.
